Go Daddy

Talking about Internet Governance before we get insights from Himanshu, I was wondering as a lead up to the discussion, do we really need a Daddy/ Big Brother to govern us?

And since we can pull out a zillion reasons for the same, who makes Daddy fair?

Informally, we already have the “Daddy”, they call it ICANN (A US non profit corporation formed by US Government)… but unfortunately their entire functioning is secretive and unaccountable … this is already accepted that we need a “Daddy/big brother” but the whole discussion or debate is that the Daddy’s working/formation should reflect the international nature and spread of Internet. There is a big fight between ICANN and ITU over the control of Internet and its resources. There have been suggestions like individual governments should have more control or the agencies like UN should have a role in IG and then came into existence “Working Group on Internet Governance (WGIG)” formed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

hmm but even the WGIG aint convincing u know, cos finally its 5 indiviuals who make define it, and act as a voice for the whole darn world...though guess i should think positive!

I agree to you...I am not at all convinced with the formation of WGIG. Total UN member countries are 192 and total members in WGIG are 40 from 24 countries. At the end of the day, its government policy makers who have to agree on something before it can be implemented and any structured body that doesn’t even have the involvement of all the stakeholders can’t enforce the decision. To me this entire debate doesn’t seem to be heading in right direction without the presence all the stakeholders.
